Music Songwriter
Roy John has performed with many artists over the years and has been writing songs and playing the guitar since he was five. He started playing and singing Gospel music in local churches and eventually migrated to writing Country and Rock songs. He formed a local band with some musician friend while in his early teens and eventually landed a spot on the local WNRG radio station hosted by Joe Deaton, a songwriter himself with hits like Loretta's Lynn "Get Set For A Heartache", Earnest Tubb's "Mr. & Mrs. Used To Be", Mel Streets "A Promise I Just Couldn't Keep" and many more. Roy John came to the attention of local businessman Jim Prater and his wife Jean who eventually became Roy John's personal manager at 13 years old. Jim Prater outfitted Roy John's band and they hit the road doing a variety of front shows and nightclubs for the next few years. Roy John, Jim and Jean parted ways when Roy John decided to attend college, at his mom and dad's persistence, instead of pursuing a career in music. Roy John's parents firmly believed in the importance of a good college education before a music career. Jim and Jean Prater signed a new artist by the name of Mel Street who had several hit songs in country music. While in college working on his Electrical Engineering degree Roy John started another band called Roy John Fuller and the Show Rogues. They played college concerts, clubs and gigs all over Southwest Virginia for a couple years. Roy John entered his first marriage and put his musical career on hold again joining the Navy to help pay for his first child's delivery costs. The Navy had excellent benefits for someone with none, so he put his musical career and college on hold again to provide for his new family.
After his 6 year Navy
tour of duty including combat action in
Vietnam, he headed for Nashville to record his first record "Angel
In Disguise"
Even with the success of Roy John's first recording he was not able to establish himself as a full time songwriter and took a job as a John Hancock insurance salesman to support his family after his Navy tour. He eventually moved back to his home town of Grundy, Virginia and started a local electronics sales and repair business. He worked and managed the electronic business for several years and even made another trip to Nashville to record some more songs funded by some local doctors that saw promise in his music. He recorded four of his favorite self written songs including: "Do it", "Out Of Hand", "Shoe's On Another's Foot", and "The First Time". He received Top Single Pick Hits from Billboard, Record World and Cashbox on these new songs, but was unable to commercially release any of the songs. After several false starts, union mine strikes, historic floods and just bad economic times in general he was forced to close the doors on the electronic business and look for another career. It was about this time that Roy John met his soul mate, co-writer and life long friend Rita. They both attended and graduated college together and moved to Florida to start new careers including co-writing many new songs together. Roy John and Rita have just completed demos on a collection of new songs that will be available soon. He continues to promote and pitch his songs to anyone in Nashville that will listen.
