     It was November 2008 when my Granddad and my uncle went deer hunting on a farm that we occasionally hunt on. It was a nice day, not to cold or to hot. It was doe day which means we could hunt bucks or doe on that day. My uncle has not killed a deer before and was anxious to get started. They went to their tree stands like ever other day to sit and wait. Well it got up in the day and my uncle was setting up against a tree when a spike buck walked up on him. He threw his rifle up and shot at the small buck but missed. He quickly loaded another shell and fired at the deer again. This time the deer fell so he got up and went over to check it out.

     After hearing a couple shots my Granddad went to find him and when he did he asked what had happen to his nose. My uncle didn’t know what he was talking about. My Granddad said it was bleeding and then may uncle said he thought he might have broken it from the recoil of the gun. They dragged the buck to the fence and my Papaw started gutting it when we looked up and saw several deer walking around the hill. My Papaw was watching the deer walk around when he spotted a nice buck. He put his 270 caliber riffle on it. The deer stopped and was watching him now. It stopped behind a tree and all he could see was its head. Eventually it walked out from behind the tree and gave Papaw a 50 or 60 yard shot broadsided. The deer fell and tried to get up so he shot it again.

     He dragged it down to were the other deer was laying and started gutting it. Meanwhile my uncle was calling everyone he knew and telling them of his successful hunting day. We brought the deer back home and I skinned them out and butchered them up for the cooler. I am going to mount the spike for my uncle. We took pictures and drank some pop and had a good old time. He lives out of state and doesn’t get to come here often to hunt with us.

     That day was worth more than money, seeing his injured face as he retold his day’s hunting story. Everyone had a great time.
